This event, organised by Orwell Local History Society with help from many hard-working volunteers, was enjoyed by around 100 people, including Mr David Lloyd, a former child evacuee to Orwell in 1939, who came all the way from Chelsea to be with us and to tell us his story.

We are so grateful to all those who worked to make this a happy and meaningful afternoon and to all those who supported the occasion.  Special thanks go to Carol and Barry Russell who put together two wonderful hampers for our Raffle, with contributions from our generous helpers, and to our young waitresses, Louisa Williams and Jemima Tatum-Horsfield who dressed themselves up as 'Lyons' Nippies'; also to Mrs Susan Knebel who loaned her father Alan Miller's war diary, moving excerpts from which were read out by David Miller during the afternoon.

From the proceeds of the Tea Party we have donated £250 to 'Help for Heroes'  and an equal amount will be retained by the History Society to enable us to continue to book speakers and arrange outings. You are all most welcome to attend our meetings, held at 8.00pm on the last Tuesday of the month from September to November and from January to May, in the Methodist Church Schoolroom, Town Green Road. Our September speaker will be David Oates, a local historian who has been researching his home village of Histon. David's talk is intriguingly entitled  'Finding features on the Flat Fen Edge.'
