This annual walk was inaugurated on January 1st 2000 as part of Orwell's Millennium celebrations. Mrs Maureen 'Mo' Marriott led the walk on this first occasion, starting and finishing at the Recreation Ground Pavilion where Georgie and Roy Primett, Audrey Bryant and their helpers served tea and cakes to the eighty or so walkers.

Heavy rain has sometimes reduced the numbers taking part, but the event has been held every year since 2000.  The rambling procession includes Orwellians of all ages; Dads with toddlers on their shoulders, Mums valiantly pushing babies in buggies through the mud, excited dogs rushing ahead and back again.  We vary our pace as we walk, falling in with different people to talk to as we go and making new friends. There's a sense of achievement when we get back to the pub, particularly if conditions were adverse, and we can look ahead to walking those footpaths again in Spring and Summer.

The usual route now begins at The Chequers, heads down Town Green Road and up Leaden Hill, follows footpaths round the fields and over the Brook to Malton Road, returning to The Chequers via Malton Road, High Street and Town Green Road.  Walkers are given the option of an extra mile or so to include the Glebe Field, Clunch Pit, Rectory Lane (across the A 603), returning along a short stretch of Victoria Drive and crossing the A603 again to Fishers Lane.

New Year's Day 2015 was cool, overcast and blustery; not encouraging weather for a walk, but twelve hardy souls and four dogs completed the Leaden Hill/Malton Road/High Street circuit before retiring to the busy Chequers for refreshment.

No one remembered to walk on the first of January 2016, but a few of us were out again on 1/1/2017, despite the rain.  Here's hoping for a brilliant day to usher in 2018 !
